The 1st Responder Scholarship exists to support and empower aspiring EMTs, paramedics, firefighters, and police officers of all ages by providing financial assistance that removes barriers to education, strengthens the emergency medical workforce, and promotes compassionate, skilled care for the communities they serve.
We believe financial need should never prevent someone from serving others, whether you're just starting out or starting over.
About Dennis and Marvin Schwoeppe
Dennis Schwoeppe spent his life showing up for others. He joined the Washington, Missouri, Fire Department on January 30, 1985, becoming a founding member of Station 5, the first station the department built outside the city limits of Washington. He earned his EMT certification in 1998 and served the Washington, Missouri Ambulance District for nearly two decades before retiring in 2015. Along the way, he earned two CPR Save Awards, a Letter of Meritorious Action, and was named EMT of the Year in 2001. In 2001, he was also named an honorary member of the fire department, a tribute to a man who gave so much for so long.
His father, Marvin, watched his son serve and was inspired to do the same in his community. Marvin was instrumental in the overseeing and construction of Marthasville Fire Department Station #3, and went on to serve 16 years with MVFD, rising to the rank of fire captain. Once retired, his daily presence at the fire station was deeply missed.
Their legacy of courage, compassion, and commitment lives on through every scholarship recipient who follows in their footsteps.

This scholarship is open to applicants of all ages pursuing EMT, paramedic, firefighter, or police officer training in Missouri. To apply, submit a one page, double spaced essay in 12 point Times New Roman font outlining your goals and commitment to serving your community.
